I once bought plates for my father-in-law for his birthday. Though polite enough not to really show it, I think I detected a profound disappointment in his eyes. Since he would not admit how upset he was, I wasn’t able to determine if it was because the plates were too dull or because he just didn’t like the idea of plates. Maybe I will give him these plates for his next birthday and see how he takes it. (Though I have noticed he now wears sunglasses around me – presumably so I can’t look into his eyes and read his mind.)

This piece's sculptural form reflects a conceptual, theme-based approach, which stands in stark contrast to the classical rules of decoration that pervade traditional ceramics.
