Ceramic Vase

Completedworks x Ekaterina Bazhenova Yamasaki

Deceptively simple, yet soulful, this vase is designed for unexpected and irreverent floral arrangements.

Its sculptural form reflects the maker’s, Ekaterina Bazhenova Yamasaki, conceptual, theme-based approach, which stands in stark contrast to the classical rules of decoration that pervade traditional ceramics. The flowing contours of the piece reference the way drapery has been used by painters to convey movement since the Renaissance.

About the Collection

Fold was developed in collaboration with mixed media artist Ekaterina Bazhenova Yamasaki, as a continuation of an ongoing study into the way materials can deceive. Presented as a collection of fine jewellery and vases, each piece exhibits its own expressive potential through the folds and creases that make up its form. Materials deceive, with the hard metal and porcelain forms appearing to imitate the visual properties of another more supple material such as foam.

Collection Narrative

Fold is a comment on memory, society, consumerism and a host of other massive topics. Dramatic silhouettes flow elegantly and effortlessly in a series of pieces that present creases, pleats, ruffles, and layered folds and explore the essences of texture and shape.

Referencing the way drapery has been used by painters to convey movement since the Renaissance, particularly in the sketches of Leonardo da Vinci, Fold is fascinated by the way fabric is folded depending on the particularities of the human condition. Informed by a knowledge of art history, the collection narrates differences in a series of folds: a neat fold in the medieval Dutch portrait, a careless fold in that of a merchant sitting for a renaissance painter - these tell the story not just of a person's mood but also their historical moment.

Combining with the history of painting, the collection also investigates the writings of Georges Perec's and his exploration and documentation of the everyday and "that which is generally not taken note of, that which is not noticed, that which has no importance". Referring back to Perec's work, household cloths, folded bedsheets and hair scrunchies are used as motifs throughout Fold - not only for their ability to capture qualities of form, light and atmosphere, but for their material and everyday presence.

Fold uses a combination of materials including ceramics, pearls and precious stones - moving fluidly between the disciplines of jewellery and sculpture. The colours of the ceramics are rendered in green, blues and whites - bands of pure colour that recall the light and shadows in the vegetable garden of the designer's grandmother in Devon.

Scrunch is part of the Fold collection. Fold is an exploration into the mutability of forms. The pieces were first created on a larger scale from lengths of rolled clay that were manipulated and kneaded by hand. The imperfections and displacements of form are entirely intentional.

Care

Completedworks creates sculpturally adventurous pieces for an astute and informed aesthetic. Nonetheless, our jewellery is always designed with the wearer in mind. In some cases, our earrings and ear cuffs may be marked with ‘L’ and ‘R’ to indicate (but not dictate) on which side each should be worn. To protect the shape of ear cuffs, we recommend not attempting to manipulate the size of the opening which has been carefully designed to allow the wearer to slide on from the very top of the ear without adjustment.

Your piece is unique and any irregularity in shape or colour is inherent and intended. Plating of the metal will eventually tarnish and fade with time and so extra care should be taken to maximise its lifespan. Please handle the jewellery carefully, avoiding contact with perfumes, cosmetics and chemicals. It can be cleaned with a soft, lint-free cloth or cotton ball. If further cleaning is necessary, it can be soaked for a few minutes in warm, soapy water, rinsed well and then dried with a soft cloth. Please avoid jewellery cleaners and antibacterial soaps.

Each jewellery piece has been worked by a craftsperson and finished by hand. Earring posts are delicate so please take care when transporting your earrings and very carefully bend back into place should they misshape. For pieces with ceramic in their design, we recommend that extra care should be taken when handling. While it is a long lasting material, it is also delicate and to maintain the lifespan of the piece it should not be dropped or placed roughly on a hard surface. For storage of all of our jewellery, we recommend keeping it in its pouch and box, using the pouch compartments to separate each piece and protect against scratches. For any assistance restoring your piece, please contact us via our website and we’d be glad to help.
